A lovely couple came to us with a vision. We want a bathroom that is sophisticated and relaxing. Casual, yet classic. We want a bathroom to retreat and relax. The signs of significant use of the bathroom were present from water damage from splash on the side of the oak cabinets to wear on the marble countertops. Great we have a clean slate to work with, I thought? However this vision turned to a challenge, "we want to keep the bathtub, shower. and tile floor." Ok, the challenge was on. We must keep the white tile floor, white tiled shower, keep the bathtub, but I get to lose the rest...
So how did we accomplish the client's vision?
All details were removed from the bath. The gold brass fixtures, gone. The white striped wall paper, gone. The oak cabinets, gone. The bath hardware, the window treatments, the cabinets and countertops, all gone. Now that our plate was clean as possible, we started piecing back the project suited to the clients vision. A wall was added between "her" vanity and the whirlpool tub. This allowed us to design a nice tiled tub surround, accented with earth-toned tumbled stone, and small black marble accent pieces placed on the corners. This gave some complementary "pop" to the cabinet color. Further, we selected a patterned border to not only complement the white tiled floor, but to highlight the beautiful new tumbled tile. The added wall also prevented the tub splash from damaging the beautiful new custom cabinets. We designed custom cabinets that added more storage space in a linen tower and in the main cabinet drawers. An outlet was added to the middle of the vanity to provide the client convenient use to a hairdryer and makeup mirror. A raised panel door was stained in a dark brown color, then distressed on the edges of the doors an "aged" look. The brown stain underneath gave a nice dimension to the black painted finish. Matching mirror frames were added to complete the classic look of the cabinetry.
The client opted for a beautiful marble countertop called "Emperador Light." The color and veining make this marble seem timeless and never out of style. Oil rubbed bronze Kohler fixtures and under-mount bowls were installed. Matching bath accessories such as towel racks, tissue holder, and flush lever created consistency to the vanity fixtures chosen. Also, we had a plantation shutter custom made to allow the top and bottom to be opened separately. The nice color chosen from Benjamin Moore completed the puzzle and turned this monochromatic design into a classic retreat for this couple to enjoy for years!
